Definite ethical investment criteria

The Environment Criteria
KPA Pension do not invest in energy companies related to energy production using non renewable energy sources, unless they form a part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and which have also received the highest certification, i.e. "a" from GES environmental assessment.

When we assess the environmental impact of our investments, we take into consideration whether or not the company has an established environmental management system, if there is an environmental policy which has been written and adopted, environmental goals which have been formulated, a person responsible for the environment, if the employees are educated in environmental issues, how the company's subcontractors are evaluated from an environmental point of view, whether the environmental work is documented and if there is an annual environmental audit.

The Corruption Criteria
KPA Pension, via their investments, shall actively influence companies so that they systematically prevent all forms of bribery and corruption in their business relations.

"Systematic prevention" means that there is a strategy and an action plan against corruption. A programme of this type can be established based on business principles such as those that Transparency International have developed.

"All forms of bribery and corruption" relate to both direct and indirect types.

The person who is guilty of bribery has received an unwarrantable reward during the discharge of their duties, while the person who is guilty of corruption has offered such a bribe.

"Business relationships" relates to subsidiaries, partners in joint ventures, suppliers, agents and other business partners.

The Criteria Human Rights
KPA Pension shall, via their investments, actively influence companies in relevant industries and regions to work systematically with basic labour legislation issues for employees.

This means influencing companies so that they for example establish a policy, a code of behaviour or equivalent, which covers the basic human rights described in ILO's conventions.

It may also be about getting companies to develop routines, which follow up on a policy or actions they have decided upon. "Or equivalent" means for example collective agreements, quality surveillance of suppliers and legislation. "Relevant industries and regions" relates to organisations where there is a particularly high risk that irregularities take place. For example, labour-intensive industries and businesses with low refinement values, which operate in low-income countries. By "employees", this relates to everybody who contributes with their work to the company, including suppliers and subcontractors. As a first stage however, focus is made on own personnel as well as the suppliers, which are responsible for the manufacture of finished products or important components that form a part of the finished products.
